The CRSD BOE modified the recommendations of the Digital Learning Committee to maximize student success. Based on recent accommodations by the publishers of Edgenuity software and our own deliberations, the CRSD BOE took the following actions.
1. The CRSD BOE removed a recommendation for “on-demand” content because this is something only Edgenuity can accomplish. This is a request staff are pursuing with the company, but implementation of the recommendation to the company has an unknown timeline.
2. The CRSD BOE removed a recommendation for an increase in writing in core classrooms. While this is already being addressed in many classrooms, the BOE chooses not to dictate to teachers how to direct each individual teaching activity. We encourage an increase in writing in the core-curriculum classes, but must leave the specific amount up to our teachers.
3. The CRSD BOE removed a recommendation that required “group activities.” This is an effective teaching strategy that is used, as appropriate, in most classrooms. Some successful teachers do not use this method, and it should not be forced upon them as a requirement.
4. The CRSD BOE modified a recommendation regarding the availability of printed materials. The modified recommendation reads: “Integrate the opportunity/access for students to refer to printed material as part of their instruction.” This recommendation can, and should, include books and outside online printed media.
5. The CRSD BOE removed a recommendation for an “opt out” for students. It is simply not possible, to require two separate instructional tracts for each lesson in a district as small as ours with its limited resources and staff.
6. The CRSD BOE modified a recommendation regarding progress reporting. The recommendation now reads: “Provide parents access to student progress through PowerSchool.” Software and proprietary issues prevent the BOE from requiring Edgenuity to provide parent access t individual student’s quizzes and tests. We understand the desire of parents to track their child’s progress, and encourage the integration of Edgenuity reports into the Power School reporting.
7. The CRSD BOE kept a recommendation that a parent training session take place in the beginning of next semester.
8. The Board modified a recommendation regarding internet access. The recommendation now reads: “Provide options to ensure that the lack of home internet access is not a detriment to student achievement.”

This one-year pilot period will provide the Board, parents, students, and teachers with information needed to deliberate the use of Edgenuity in core classrooms during the 2014-2015 school year. The legitimate concerns that have been raised about digital learning and new concerns that will arise from state and federal policy should be addressed within our own school district. Through mutually respectful discussions and work sessions, we hope a consensus can be established on which to base future policy and practice.
The Board and CRSD Administration appreciate the valuable conversation that has progressed during the past semester. We welcome those who offer their opinions, questions, and concerns in a manner respectful to our employees.
We are confident that the teachers and parents are mutually focused, motivated, and committed to the success of our students.
We extend our sincere appreciation to all those who have participated in the discussions thus far. We look forward to additional discussions as we collectively plot a course for our students’ futures.
The Copper River School District Board of Education
1. Continue the use of classes and curriculums provided by Edgenuity Inc. in all current subject areas with the following changes;
a. Integrate the opportunity/access for students to refer to printed material as part of their instruction.
b. Provide parents access to student progress through PowerSchool.
c. Provide another parent training session in the beginning of next semester.
2. Make no changes to products or their use at the Slana School.
3. Provide options to ensure that the lack of home internet access is not a detriment to student achievement.
