One way is through the online book fair. There is a large selection of books, mostly targeting the k-8th grade range, and shipping is FREE to your door on all book orders! Glennallen Elementary gets Scholastic dollars for every book you purchase through our fair, which is then used to purchase more books, which are then made accessible to your student! The fair is accessible NOW and runs through August! Promote literacy and reading in our community and check out the virtual book fair! Waterford UPSTART is a new program in Alaska for four-year old children. This program is designed to prepare four-year old children for kindergarten. Each child receives a fun and individualized curriculum for either early reading, math and science (with an emphasis on early literacy) that is done 5 days a week, 15-20 minutes per day. In addition to the software, each family is provided with a laptop computer (which they'll get to keep if they meet the usage requirement) as well as Internet access if needed - all at no cost. We also pair each family with a coach to track and monitor the child's usage of the program, answer any technical or motivational questions, and support the family so that they can continue learning offline. The only requirement to participate is that the child be planning to start Kindergarten fall of 2021. Families that are interested can register by visiting www.waterfordupstart.org/register or by calling 1-888-982-9898.

“A Christmas Carol,” performed as a one-man show by Storyteller Tim Lowry, is coming to Glennallen! The two performances will be on Friday, Dec 6 and Saturday, Dec 7 at 6:30 p.m. each night. In addition to the two performances of “A Christmas Carol,” Tim will spend Friday & Saturday morning at the school. On Friday, he will interact with upper and lower elementary students and also with Mrs. Rude’s high school Communications class. On Saturday morning, Tim will host a free, open-to-the-community workshop on storytelling called “Out ‘n No Book.” Growing up in the mountains of Kentucky, Tim often heard his grandfather say that there was plenty of stuff you couldn’t learn “out ‘n no book.” His grandfather used storytelling as a way to preserve history and culture for the family and the community. Beginning with an engaging story about his grandfather, Tim will share practical tips for sharing your own personal narratives, historical stories, folk tales, legends, epics, and myths. As one mountain storyteller put it, “It won’t do just to read the old tales out of a book. You have to TELL ‘EM to make ‘em go right!” The workshop will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will last 1.5–2 hours. Thank you to the Glennallen PTO & to CVEA’s Community Foundation for helping bring these events to our students & community!

The students of the Copper River School District were very fortunate to have motivational speaker Donteh Devoe in Glennallen to talk to them about making positive life choices. Growing up in the Anchorage area, Donteh DeVoe was exposed to criminal activity and drug addiction at an early age. Soon he became addicted to the fast life, and making money was his mission. After his second prison term, he began to understand his potential and worth. He is now the author of a treatment manual entitled "From Hustling to Healing" which highlights overcoming the addiction to a criminal lifestyle. He has been featured on numerous news outlets for his continued involvement in positive community efforts which include reentry housing and mentoring youth through public activities. He is an entrepreneur and public speaker with a passion to encourage and inspire, and seeks to continually motivate, change, and redirect the lives of men and women alike. The CRSD community was fortunate to be touched by his words of inspiration and thank him for his passion in helping students realize and maximize their full potential.
